Cladding panels re-secured on multi-storey car park

Client: Newport City Council
Location: Newport, Gwent
Approved Installer: Trac Structural
Reference No: CS021

Following a structural inspection at Park Square multi-storey car park there were concerns over the wall ties and whether they were providing sufficient support for the brick cladding panels.

Defects

Poor condition of cladding panel wall ties and insufficient support being provided at the nibs at each floor of the concrete frame.

Helifix Solution

  • Working to a repair programme devised by Helifix engineers, the local Approved Installer, who had earlier undertaken an external structural survey using rope access techniques, carried out the necessary repairs working from a suspended cradle.
  • Both DryFix and ResiTie remedial stainless steel ties were installed in a triangular arrangement to provide a truss-like action that ensured both vertical and lateral restraint of the brick panels.

  • Some limited crack stitching was also carried out using 1m lengths of HeliBar bonded into the mortar beds with HeliBond cementitious grout.

  • No taking down and rebuilding was required and the repairs were completed rapidly and efficiently with the car park remaining open throughout.
